Samat perusasiat pätevät kaikissa osastoissa: tarkista myyjän oikeus myydä, katso kohde paikan päällä, älä maksa ennakkoa tuntemattomalle ja sovi kaupasta kirjallisesti.
Alla on osastokohtaiset lisätarkistukset. Vaihtokaista ei välitä maksuja eikä tarkasta kohteita, joten tarkistus on ostajan ja vuokraajan vastuulla.
In all sections
- Ask for the registration number, VIN or serial number and check that they match the item and the seller's documents.
- Inspect the item in daylight and start or try it. If the seller is unknown, it is wise to take someone with you.
- Record the parties, item and identifiers, price, known faults and handover time in the bill of sale.
Motorcycle, moped, quad bike or snowmobile
- Check the registration details and any off-road declaration from traffic use on Traficom's service.
- Compare the mileage or operating hours with the service book and inspection records.
- Check the chain and sprockets, tyres, brake discs, bearings and oil leaks. Listen for a cold start.
- Ask about tuning changes and de-restricting: reduced power affects who is allowed to ride the bike.
Boat or boat engine
- Check the registration requirement and registration details when the boat is at least 5.5 metres long or the engine power is at least 15 kW.
- Inspect the hull out of the water: osmosis, cracks, repair marks and the condition of the bottom. In a wooden boat, rot; in an aluminium boat, corrosion.
- Test the engine in water. Ask about operating hours, servicing, impeller replacement and winter storage.
- Make sure which equipment is included in the sale: trailer, electronics, safety equipment and cover.
Machine or work equipment
- Compare the operating hours with wear on the machine and the service history. Ask for the service book or service invoices.
- Check for hydraulic leaks, hoses, joints, tracks and tyres, as well as cracks and welded repairs in the frame.
- When buying from a company, make sure the price includes VAT. For a registered machine, check the inspection and vehicle tax.
- When hiring a machine, agree liability for damage, fuel and transport in writing.
Spare part, tyres or rims
- Make sure it fits using the part number or VIN before paying. Brand and model alone are not always enough.
- For tyres, check tread depth, year of manufacture (DOT) and even wear. For rims, check straightness, bolt pattern and centre bore.
- A used safety part, such as an airbag or seat belt, may not be safe for reuse.
- When buying by post, agree a return if the part does not fit. In distance selling by a company, the consumer usually has a 14-day right to cancel.
Hiring a space or item
- Make a written hire agreement: time, price, deposit and its return, liability for damage, cleaning and return condition.
- Check and photograph the item's condition on handover so that there are no disputes over the deposit.
- Ask whether the landlord's insurance covers hire use and what the excess is. When hiring a trailer or vehicle, check the driving licence requirement and motor liability insurance.
- When hiring premises, make sure of the number of people, permits and neighbour agreements, such as quiet hours.
Motorhome or caravan
- Check the gross weight against your driving licence category and note how much payload is left for luggage.
- Ask for a recent moisture measurement or measure it yourself. Moisture damage in the walls, floor or roof joints is the most expensive fault.
- Test the gas appliances, heating, fridge and water system. Ask about the gas inspection and the condition of the boiler.
- For a motorhome, do the same checks as for a car: mileage, inspection, servicing, rust in the chassis.
- When hiring, agree the mileage limit, deposit, excess and cleanliness on return in writing.
